Wonderhood Studios’ Tom Garton on factual drama and the future of TV
At the press screening of Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards in London, Channel 5 chief content officer Ben Frow highlighted the current fashion for factual drama.
“There seems to be a trend for factual dramas that highlight issues,” he said. “And I’m proud we’re able to join that group of people who are highlighting a very serious issue; in this case the grooming of young men and abuse of power.”
Factual dramas require rigour, courage and working closely with commissioners. But they can pay dividends, as the pre-TX positive reaction to Power - which stars Martin Clunes as the disgraced BBC newsreader - shows.
It airs on 24 March on Channel 5 and ahead of its transmission we spoke with Wonderhood director of development Tom Garton about how it worked, what he thinks commissioners and audiences are looking for and what Wonderhood has in store.
