In the week that it emerged creative industries minister Ian Murray has written to Ofcom chief executive Dame Melanie Dawes, saying that “the television market is transforming” so Channel 4 and the BBC should forge closer ties, we are taking time to look at the tectonic plates that are shifting and reshaping the industry.
Mega-mergers and consolidation are the buzzwords of the moment, whether it be the proposed union between All3Media and Banijay or Sky’s owner Comcast looking at buying ITV.

So we spoke with the chair of the British Broadcasting Challenge, Pat Younge, for his overview of the industry, the challenges it faces and the opportunities in the emerging new landscape.
With his extensive experience at the BBC, ITV Studios and as an indie boss at Sugar Films and Cardiff Productions, and now at creative consultancy Skin In The Game Studios, he has some ideas about how smaller indies can continue to thrive and win more commissions.
